First, I would like to extend my condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Doug Ashcraft who recently passed away after a battle with cancer. Doug was instrumental in developing many of the CASE Risk Management Tools and served for a time as CASE Chair. He was a tremendous person who was committed to the structural engineering profession. He will be missed by all of us.

The Mission Statement for the Structural Engineers Certification Board (SECB) is as follows:

  • To determine the level of unique and additional education, examination, and experience necessary to perform the science and art of Structural Engineering.
  • To provide a common national process for structural engineers to become certified.
  • To provide the public and stakeholders with an identification instrument that distinguishes an engineer with those unique and additional qualities necessary to perform structural engineering.

I am sure you have seen a gaggle of geese flying in a “V” formation. The lead goose creates an “aerodynamic draft” for the other geese in the flight enabling them to fly farther. He expends his energy fighting headwinds to create the draft while the other geese in the flight honk, encouraging the lead goose along their journey. From time to time the lead goose will fall back into the “V” and honk to encourage another goose taking the lead position.

Truthfully, I wish for all structural engineering firms to have a Culture that exudes harmony and happiness for owners and staff, as well as their clients. Probably one of the most important traits of a firm’s culture is the way in which staff communicates with one another and with clients.
