Michael O’Rourke has been a professor in the Civil Engineering Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, since 1974. He has taught over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, Professor O’Rouke supervised 62 students for Master of Science theses and 10 for Ph. D dissertations. From 1997 to 2017, Professor O’Rouke served as Chair of the Snow and Rain Loads Subcommittee of the American Society of Civil Engineer’s ASCE 7, Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. He is a Former Chair of the ASCE 7 Snow and Rain Loads Subcommittee and is a Fellow of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI). He is the nation’s foremost snow expert and is known for his extensive snow load research, authoring many articles and guides related to snow loads.

Maryann Phipps has worked as a structural engineer for 40 years, evaluating, designing, and renovating buildings in California. She is an active leader in the engineering community and a regular speaker on earthquake performance and the seismic protection of non-structural building components. In 2022, she was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. She received the H.J. Brunnier Lifetime Achievement Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California in 2020, serving as the organization’s first female President in 1993.

Robert (Bob) Silman, founder and President Emeritus of the structural engineering firm Silman, formerly Robert Silman Associates, passed away in 2018. Prior to the firm’s founding in 1966, Bob worked at Severud Associates, Ove Arup & Partners, and Amman & Whitney. Bob taught at Cornell, Columbia, Yale, and Harvard and was a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was also an honorary member of the AIA New York Chapter, the Structural Engineers Association of New York, and the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering.
