The City of Vancouver, Washington, has a new development along the Columbia River with the Grant Street Pier as its centerpiece. The site, formerly home to a local paper mill, is now home to hotels, restaurants, and a boardwalk. As the focal point for this up-and-coming area known as “The Waterfront,” the pier has an iconic form that is sure to attract visitors. The pier’s triangular, post-tensioned concrete deck overhangs the water by 90 feet and provides an expansive view of the river. A cable system and 80-foot-tall mast support the deck.

2017 Sets Records for Geographical Diversity, Number, and Height of Skyscrapers

More buildings of 200 meters (656 feet) in height or taller were completed in 2017 than in any other year, with a total of 144 completions, marking the fourth consecutive record-breaking year. This was an increase of 95 percent from 2013 when only 74 buildings of 200 meters or more were completed. The total number of 200-meter buildings in the world is 1,319, an increase of 12.3 percent from 2016 and a 402 percent increase from 2000 when only 263 existed.

Renovations at Wrigley Field

In 2014, Wrigley Field turned 100 years old. In 2016, the Chicago Cubs played their 100th year at the ballpark and won the World Series for the first time since 1908. The Ricketts family has been pursuing an extensive renovation of Wrigley Field, including the stadium and surrounding area, since purchasing the Chicago Cubs baseball team and Wrigley Field in 2009.

Founded in 1990, Church of the Resurrection is the largest United Methodist Church in the U.S. In 2012, HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA) joined Church of the Resurrection’s mission to create a permanent sanctuary at their 76 acre Leawood, Kansas, campus. Design for the new 140,000 square foot main sanctuary and support space began in November 2012 and spanned a two-year period until construction documents were issued in November of 2014. McCown Gordon Construction broke ground in March of 2015 and completed the construction over a period of two years, ending March of 2017.
