In the past, CASE has brought their committee members together for a day-long working session with a roundtable the night before. This year, along with other ACEC Coalitions, CASE developed a virtual education program with committee meetings. Held February 24-26, this meeting had several education sessions ranging from Effective Communication and Documentation and Navigating Cyber Security in Engineering to Maximizing Client Relationships at a Physical Distance and Remote Work Tax Implications.

The AISC Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications (AISC 358-22) is available for public review through April 19, 2021.

The 2022 edition of the AISC 358-22 draft will be available as a free download at aisc.org/publicreview between March 15 and April 19, 2021. This draft includes a new proprietary chapter, Chapter 15 DuraFuse Frames Moment Connection; substantive updates to Chapters 5, 6, 7, and 9; and revisions to Chapters 9 and 14 from proprietary connections to nonproprietary connections. Printed copies are available (for a $35 nominal charge) by calling 312.670.5411.

 Please submit comments using the form provided online by April 19, 2021, for consideration. The final document is scheduled to be available in December 2022.

Casa Adelante is a seismically resilient nine-story affordable housing project for low-income seniors, with 25% of the units reserved for formerly homeless seniors. The specially “tuned” reinforced concrete building uses self-centering walls on a rocking mat foundation. Lead extrusion dampers within the foundation control the seismic response. The building has been evaluated to have zero days of downtime for repair after a major earthquake, and the project received a Gold Rating from the US Resilience Council.

The NCSEA Communications Committee challenged its Member Organizations (the state SEAs) to share their most effective program for achieving NCSEA’s goal that “practicing structural engineers are recognized by clients, media, policymakers, educators, students, and the public for the value of their contributions to society.” SEAs were asked to submit up to one entry for each of the following categories: Public Outreach, Political Advocacy, Students and Educators, and Other Outreach Programs Related to Current NCSEA Initiatives. CASE 962-HNational Practice Guideline on Project and Business Risk Management

This guideline is intended to assist structural engineering companies in the management of risk associated with projects and to provide commentary regarding the management of risk associated with business practices. The guideline is organized into two sections that correspond with these two areas of risk, Project Risk Management and Business Practices Risk Management. The goal of the guideline is to educate and inform structural engineers about risk issues so that the risks they face in their practices can be effectively mitigated, thus making structural engineering firms more successful.
